The red dram LED lights up and the computer doesn't start. So I open up, press down on the RAM and try again (no movement or click ... just gentle pressure) .. it'll start. I'll play games et cetera and it'll be fine.

I'll turn off the computer before I go to sleep, then the next day I'll turn it back on and I'll have the red light issue again. If I just shut it down and turn it back on I won't have the problem though.

I originally thought maybe the ram slot was defective or loose, so I tried shaking the case ALOT after getting it to run today .. and it still powered up just fine. It's just cold boots after some larger period of time that end up being an issue.

I'm running:

- G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
- CORSAIR HX series HX650 650W ATX12V v2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC
- ASUS P8Z77-I Deluxe LGA 1155 Intel Z77

Solution
it sounds like a capacitor issue (typically will be hard to start but work ok on once it's on)

that being said, have you tried the basics? updating the bios on ur mobo.
just run with 1x4gb RAM for a while (you will hardly notice it)

I'll try updating the bios, I currently have one stick in but its difficult to judge how long the system has to be powered down to replicate the issue.

No dice. It takes more than an hour of shutdown time to reproduce the problem. Last time I reproduced it, my computer was off for 5 hours.

I updated the bios and tried different RAM configurations ... still unsure of what's causing the problem. Its pretty frustrating since every solution I try means leaving it off over night.
