Insane GPU problem

Hi!

I have an HIS Iceq Boost 7950 (3GB) and it's worked great since I bought it 2 months ago.

I moved it to a new CPU, mobo, and case yesterday:

E3 Xeon 1230-v2
ASRock Z77E-ITX
Coolermaster Elite 130

It still works great...until I close the case.

Closing the case will cause the display to go black, the system to crash to an unrecoverable black screen, and the GPU fans to go to 100%. This happens the moment the card needs to work hard (Launch a game).

Desktop use has no crashes. This ONLY happens when initializing 3D, and ONLY with the cover on.

I've never seen a problem like it before. The PSU works fine because if the case is off there's no problem.

Heat is no issue because I've carefully monitored temps, and there's no reason the card will crash literally MOMENTS after putting the cover on.

Cover off = works great
Cover on = crashes to black screen with fans spinning up

Any ideas?

I thought that might be the problem, but then how come the computer still works fine when not playing a game?

I can run the comp fine with the case on as long as I don't play a game.

If it was a short, I should have this problem no matter what, right?

I was able to replicate the problem by squeezing the card between my thumb and forefinger. Didn't need a case or metal surface or anything.

Apparently the source of the problem is having even a slight amount of pressure placed on the GPU cooler. Perhaps it's shorting something within the card itself?

Now I have to figure out how the hell I'm going to be able to close the case without squeezing the card in any way shape or form. =(

Does the side of the case touch the graphics card cooler.

You know what is happening don`t you ?
You said if i squeeze the card I can replicate what happens if I put the side of the case on.

Lets use a bit of logic here.
Does the side of the case touch the card. yes or no? apply any pressure to it ?
Touching no gap? Yes.

It is bending the card in the slot away from the gold pin contacts on one side of the Pci-e slot.

The same is true also of the cooler on the card. It may be lifting due the pressure exerted on it from the side panel of the case.

Flexing.

Yes, the case must be applying enough pressure to the card to make things go wrong. =(

I'm going to see if I can gain some room by shifting the motherboard over a slight bit or something. I don't think this problem is as widespread because few cards are as big as the HIS 7950. =/

Usualy there are some spacers for the motherboard (between the mobo and the case) so that the mobo wont touch the case. Usually theese spacers are arround 1 cm long and they are from metal. You can search some rubber spacers that are shorter and baaam, you can win 5 to7mm witch will solve your problem.
