Purchase Samsung 840 Pro... Or wait for a potential 850 Pro announcement?

Hey everyone,

I've been slowly building my new Gaming PC and only have two parts left: the SSD and the Video Card. I'm 100% willing to wait for the GTX 790 announcement, but I'm on the fence about waiting on the SSD. The 840 pro looks and has great reviews, but considering Samsung's normal update frequency, I don't want to buy something "old" for the next iteration to be released a few weeks from now. I absolutely understand the limitation of SATA at the moment, so I can only imagine the benefits being minimal at best, but I'm just... not sure. I was wondering the communities input on this, as the 256GB 840 pro just went on sale on Newegg at $229.99.

The new SATA 3.2 and SATA Express standards were adopted earlier this year. It marks the beginning of the migration to affordable consumer oriented PCI-e solid state drives.

For the past several months Samsung has been quietly mass producing small format OEM versions for netbooks, notebooks, ultrabooks, and tablets. They are not yet available to the general public. Other companies have announced they are also In the process of producing the PCI-e ssd's. Like Samsung the other companies are also focusing on small portable computers first.

I have already started adding PCI-e ssd's as well as the new M.2 SATA ssd's to the ssd database. Just a couple of technical reviews right now. Here is the link...

The 840 Evo is an update to the 840 (regular not Pro). It is perfectly likely that there will be an update to the Pro line soon as well. Actually, Newegg is now showing the Pro as Unavailable. Also it went on sale at Amazon for $215 a couple of days ago and is now back up at $230. The combination of these events makes me also wonder if there is an imminent update to the Pro line.

Well we haven't heard about anything to do with the 840 pro other than a possible FW update in the future

I think it is the best time to buy it, here is the reason: the average customer review is 4.7 star on Amazon, if you’re a professional or a hard-core gamer looking for a top-notch SSD for your system, especially if it’s a portable computer, the Samsung 840 Pro will make a great investment.

The Samsung 840 Pro has been on the market for a while, it’s not the most expensive SSD. On the contrary, the 256GB capacity 840 Pro’s prices have dropped to $ 214 on Amazon, costing just $0.835 per gigabyte.

If there is a new model like 850, it must in a High price and have time to drop to 840' price.

Here is Samsung 840 Pro Review – Is it the best SSD?

zhaoniupai - This thread is 3 months old and should have been closed by one of the Moderators.

The prices you quoted here and your web site are high. This month several well known online vendors had the Samsung 850 Pro SATA 3 6Gb/s 256GB solid state drive on sale for $159.99 and the Samsung 840 EVO SATA 3 6Gb/s 256Gb/s ssd for $129.99.

The new model is not a Samsung 850. The new model is the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA designed for mobile computers and the price is about the same as the 840 EVO. Samsung and other ssd manufacturers are concentrating on mSATA and the new M.2 SATA ssd's designed for mobile computers. Last year there were more mobile computers sold than desktop computers. This year even more mobile pc's were sold while the sale of desktop pc's continued to decline.

Also, the M-SATA EVO is not going to be sold to general public, only businesses
