Hi all,

Not to long ago i build my new pc. And a while after that my computer started crashing. Memory management, ntfs something, and other bsod's. All of these (you guys pointed out) is because me memory is either broken or non compatible.
Well... The memory isn't broken... So its not compatible.
My question is why?

I'm using a maximus v formula, intel i7 3770k and this the memory i'm using: Patriot Viper 3 Series DDR3 16GB 1600MHz (PC3 12800) Memory Kit PV316G160C0K.
Maybe i need to turn on xmp?
In the bios it said all the right things about the ram... But it was all set to automatic witch caused more crashes. After i changed that to what it was (1600, 9-9-9 etc) it crashed less.
What am i doing wrong or is it simply not compatible?
In the compatibility list of patriot viper the maximus v formule is not mentioned. Is the only solution to by new ram?

Help me please.

Ps: sorry for my bad english grammar.

Great motherboard, nice CPU.
Set you timings to 10-10-10-28 and see what happens.
At that loose of a latency, stability should improve.

And does that motherboard have a memory test button, physically on the board?
You may want to look that up in the Asus manual and try that test.

Jack....
I totally missed that he specified what ram he had. I bet you caught the problem thou.
The ram overclock(latency) he was running was too aggressive, unstable.

Patriot is a good name. But 10-10-10-27 @1600 MHz isn't very good....
it's likely binned, no way it will do CL9 and be stable

1. memtest86+ is the gold standard for testing ram.
2. Go to the patriot web site and access their ram configurator. Enter your motherboard, and you will get a list of their compatible ram.
3. Do not bother trying to get the best speed or latency out of your ram. It makes little difference in teal app performance or fps. Think 1% http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/sandy-bridge-memory-scaling-choosing-the-best-ddr3
4. If you want, try giving the ram a bit more voltage.

yeah..... I haven't had a set of modules on a QVL in many years..... IU'll bet at the CAS 10 settings it works fine.... would likely even work at CAS 9 with a lil voltage boost.

I just burned memtest to a dvd... but i thought you had to run that before installing your pc or something.
Oh and i picked the wrong serial number and thus the wrong ram.. its : PV316G160C9

I tested it by removing one of the modules for a day and then the other for a day... on both sticks they crash. unless there both broken.... in that case... shit...

I just checked the website again... there the black mamba's so accoording to the site they are compatible... i think i missed that before then.
But why then do i keep getting memory management bsod's.
If i do nothing but typing i don't get em...
But when i play games, start editting video's or something it crashes.

1. Since your ram is supported, contact patriot for help.
2. Some motherboards are sensitive to where the ram is installed. Check your motherboard manual.
3. Is there a bios update that might address your ram issue? Be careful and do not update unless it will fix your problem. A bad bios update can brick your motherboard.
4. Usually only a few minutes testing will let you know if the ram is OK. Much longer is only if you need long term verification of good/bad.
5. Are you overclocking the cpu? If so, get everything back to stock and default settings until the ram issue is sorted out.

there in the right slots.
The bios is up to date, without faults.. it did not have a specific update to adress ram issues
i am not overclocking the cpu atm... won't do that untill my ram issues are fixed
i'll start testing with memtest... how long should be enough to see if there is anything wrong?

My guess is he had a stable OC at say 1.35 volts for the sake of this discussion ..... and became unstable when he added 3rd and 4th sticks (this is normal). So he went to 1.40 and still had issues.... so he went to 1.45 and still had issues.... so he went to 1.50 ....and kept experimenting till he found that 1.53 (+0.18) worked

Yes, that is pretty much how it happened! Just experimented a little at time.

Bios is already up to date.. tomorrow i'll be following jack's advice and run memtest.
Would it help to turn down the timing a bit? from 9-9-9-24 to 10-10-10-28 or something?

And the update:
I've been running memtest for about 11 passes, 24 hours... i know you said 12 hours but i was gone all day and night and when i returned it was 24 hours after turning it on ^^

There were no errors at all... soooooo that means my memory isn't faulty.
Also memtest said it had all the specifications it should have... being xmp ready and all all bios setting were default apart from the xmp turned on, on profile 1.

so whats the next step?
