few weeks ago my hdd got corrupted or something ( was on standby/sleep-mode and i killed it with powerswitch ) didnt go further than post.

anyways, reinstalled windows etc but now i cant overclock, even with an fairly low 3.8 ghz OC it becomes unstable and starts freezing ( no bsod )

max ive gotten now is 3.7 -.- ( with "old" windows, ive had 24/7 @ 4.2 stable )

CPU : FX-8320
MoBo : Asus m5a97 R2.0

How long did you run the 4.2 GHz overclock on it (months? a year?), and what kind of temps where you getting with that overclock? Are you able to get it booted to the point where you can see what temps are doing at the 3.8 GHz before it starts freezing?

prime95'd usually 55-57c - 58-60c on hotter days, but in regular use ( gaming etc ) never went above 50c.

got the fx-8320 june - this year.

after i re-installed windows i set it to 4.0 and ran prime and it was sitting nicely @ 48-50c.
but it just randomly freezes, like for example when im trying to play league of legends and i press search game, it freezes, if i watch youtube vids, it randomly freezes.

cooler is an scythe ninja 3 with 2x 1900 rpm fans push/pull

edit : temperature isnt the problem :/

Temp seemed like a decent starting spot, but I agree, doesn't seem to be any issue there. Actually, based on what you've laid out, I think it's reasonable to search for other culprit besides overclock. Have you tried leaving it at stock speed for some extended use to see if you still have stability issues? That's what I'd try next.

I'm thinking maybe software issue, not hardware - except maybe HDD concerns since you do believe it already got corrupted, thus the reason for the re-install.

ive been running it @ 3.6 for a moment without problems, ill run p95 for a moment and we shall see.

edit : 3rd test going on and core temperature 40c - socket temp 55c
edit2 : test still going, no failures etc, core temp dropped to 38c socket temp to 52c. ( could be cause the balcony door open and outside temperature is like 10c? )
edit3 : temperature went back to original.
edit 4 : self test 1024k and few more tests done, core temperature has raised to 42c and socket to 57c. going to let it be there for few hours and report back.

I've got maybe two theories for you:

1. Software issue of some kind, perhaps re-install of the game(s) that freeze could be a path (or more complex combination of driver updates and such if you didn't do since re-installing OS)
2. Your HDD is actually a problem, either simply random fails or it is related to temp of the HDD, and as it spins up more, or heat builds in your case it is failing

I have two theories that I can think of at this point:

1. It is a software issue and possibly a re-install of the game(s) that freeze is a potential path - (or more complex combination of driver updates and such if you didn't do since re-installing OS)
2. The HDD is a problem and it is either random failing or as it is being used and temps build in it and your case it is failing (and is just far more sensitive to temp than it should be due to an overall failure of the drive)

Frustrating problem though, I've been there before...

tried re-installing game, didnt work. But ive noticed that i have craploads of windows updates available, ill download & install them all and try again.

edit : installed the windows updates, went to bios, set overclock to 4200 mhz ( 240 blk - 17.5x mult )

League hasnt crashed yet, prime95 blend runs nicely, temperatures are on the little bit hotter 55-60c side, but i dont use this pc other really than gaming & sometimes streaming so i think im good.

Sounds promising that you've got it resolved. Temps in the 55 - 60 C range while running prime 95 isn't that bad, building heat is what it does, if that's where you are at for that, I doubt you're hitting that high for gaming. Crossing my fingers things are in good shape for you now.
