Upgrade from GTX 660 to GTX 670/GTX 760

I currently have a Galaxy GTX 660 in my build. I'm thinking about selling my card and getting a new or lightly used GTX 670 or GTX760 for around $200-$250 range. I get around 30-35 FPS at 1080p Ultra in most games I have. I would like higher FPS at this setting in current games but I'm fine running at 720p for a lot higher FPS. My main concern is for the next generation of games. I want to be have a card to at a minimum run those games at 720p around 50-60FPS. Would it be worth it to upgrade to a 670 or 760 from my GTX660? If so, which one should I get?

Solution
if you are really fine with playing in 720p, then i see no reason why you should upgrade your card. its quite ample enough to plow through 720p max settings if you are so inclined.

I don't think that this upgrade will be worth it. Your GTX 660 will be fine to run games at 1080p for a bit more time. Save your money and wait for next generation AMD cards (which may be revealed next week) or the GTX 800 series (codenamed Volta) next year.

Always a tough choice... Upgrade now or wait? If you are happy to drop the resolution down then I'd suggest waiting another generation before upgrading. Personally, I won't drop down from 1080p and will do what it takes to give me near Ultra settings with 50+fps.

If you can get a good price on selling the 660 (still under warranty?) and good 670, then why not?

Yea my card can get through anything now at 720pUltra at a high FPS but I'm not sure if it will hold that 50-60FPS range for the next generations of games at this resolution.

in 720p? it will buddy. i'll even go as far as to say it'll last 1~2 years high settings with 40+fps to boot.

I can play almost anything at 1080p max around 30-35FPS which is playable but 50-60FPS is way smoother which is what I prefer that why I turn down the resolution in some games. I didnt know there were new cards coming out next year though. I'm sure they will support new technology as well. I prefer Nvidia over AMD just because I'm familiar with them though. If they release an decent mid-range card for around $200-$250 range I could see why it would be a good idea to wait.

I'm not a hardcore PC gamer. I have my consoles for that and I'll have both PS4 and Xbox One at launch. But I'm starting to notice the difference in the quality of PC games over consoles so if the game is multiplatform I would prob get on PC because they look better.

I would rather do that as well but I dont want to spend the $300+ for a card thats capable of that. I dunno maybe if I hold off now i could put the extra $$ when the new generation cards release to get a that will be able to hold it down at 1080p max

Yea 720p still looks good to me on my 24" LED monitor and my 42" plasma. I dont see too much of a difference from 720p and 1080p on these screen sizes. I'll just keep what I have and wait for the new generation of cards. Thanks for all the input everyone.

if you are going to be getting both ps4 and xbone then i see no purpose for splurging anymore money on your pc except maybe for cheaper on-sale games. graphics is not pc gaming's definitive advantage over the consoles - its games like civ, dota 2, sc 2 plus a whole lot of other games too numerous to list and a ton of unique indie games that you can get from no where else that makes pc the best platform there is. graphics doesn't make a game great, gameplay does :D

At the time I built my PC (a few months ago) I bought the 660, the 660Ti was around $300-$350 i believe. I only wanted to spend $250 max for a card and I read the 660 will get the job done for my budget. But I see your point, there is no point without the eyecandy. I can run Tomb Raider at 1080p max(50-60FPS) until I turn on TressFX for her hair. It makes her hair move more life-like and it kills my FPS when turned on(30-35FPS). Her individual hair strands are processed separately by the GPU. This is when I need to turn down my resolution a bit to get the FPS I want. Its at stock speeds so I guess I'll OC it to see what I'll gain.
