Desktop interfering with laptop connection

My daughter got a new HP desktop computer. I have a HP Laptop that has been working fine on our wireless router. We switched everything around and bought a new modem. Well whenever I try to connect the desktop to the router the internet will not work on my laptop. Then my laptop say DNS server unavailable and my desktop says Local area connection 2 doesn't have a valid IP connection.

Please help

Are both computers setup to automatic settings - if either have manual settings, this could be the issue. The easiest way to check this, is to get the laptop connected only, then look at it's settings. Make sure the PC is setup the same way. If the Laptop uses a static IP, that will need to be changed.

I'm having DHCP issues which is why I put in settings. I don't know how to fix it permanently and Comcast doesn't either!
