my Iomega external hard drive will not connect. only option given is to format

When I plug the hard drive to my computer it comes on. I hear the sound it makes when it normally connects, but it only will let me format, which I don't want to do at all. The light flashes and there is no sound running sound. I hope this explains it clearly enough to get some help

If you view the drive in Disk Management does it show the space as unallocated or RAW? You could try changing the drive letter or assigning one if it does not exist.
