Hello,
I'm thinking that maybe my HDD, with its age, I'm hearing it making a weird noise, like it clicks. I would like to take a closer look at it, but I'm afraid once I take it out all my data will be lost :|. On the other hand I would also like to know, if it is broken or if it does get borken, what happens when I put a new HDD? will it format it? Do I need a pen with the latest PS3 Firmware?

Thanks in advance!

If you take it out, the data will not be lost. Your data is stored on the hard drive, not on the ps3 itself.

HOWEVER it seems it is dying and you are in need of a replacement. There's a way to transfer all of your data to another, but that I do not know how to do.

When installing a new drive in the PS3, it's best to download the newest firmware and put it on a pen drive. Read the online instructions as the folders need to be set up properly for the PS3 to locate the files.

The ps3 uses a proprietary format that can't be read in a PC. If you want to check it out in a PC, be sure to use the PS3's backup feature to make a backup first. you can then use it in a PC and format it if necessary. I'm not sure if you can read the SMART status without it being formatted first, but I'd try. As long as you don't format the drive, it should still work fine once back in the PS3. If not, have the PS3 format it and reinstall the firmware. You can then restore the backup.
