If you're an audiophile there is NO motherboard that will be up to your standards. However, I happen to have this type of Realtek audio and it is fine for normal listening. It's relatively sharp and there's virtually no noise or distortion inherently(if your speakers are terrible then you'll have distortion).

I'm guessing by your question that you already understand much of how audio works and the terminology behind it so I'll leave you with this.

i had an asus m5a97 for a while and it was a fantastic board but the funny thing is is that my on-board audio was broken, i got a replacement and it worked but i had already got a 990fx mobo. and like matthew said if you are very picky with your audio get a sound card if not on-board audio will do, it didnt sound that bad to me although once in a great while i would hear some interference noises.
