I have a Netgear router and would like to know if it would be possible to connect my phone to the router someway either USB, wireless etc.. to use the 3G/4G internet.

http://www.netgear.com/home/products/mobile-broadband/dsl-3g-mobile-broadband/DGN2200M.aspx

I have a credit card machine plugged into the router and need to be able to continue to process payments when the broadband stops working which it is doing at the moment.

I see router has something called wireless extender, does this mean it should connect to my phone and share the connection to all that is connected to the router ports?

Thank you.

Your router has the functionality you need, which is a 3G backup connection. Wireless extender is something else, it would just repeat a wireless network.

What you need is to set your router to "ADSL with fail-over to mobile broadband", as per page 16 on the manual:

http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/DGN2200M/DGN2200M_UM_04Nov11.pdf

The steps are described on the manual, please let us know if you have any problems.

I have plugged my phone in to the usb port and set the phone to usb tethering, nothing happens on the router setup screen just see "no supported usb dongle" or something like that. There is an option to input a username and password once a dongle is recognized!!

I thought the phone would mimic a usb internet dongle with this router, maybe wrong.
Thanks again.

I just noticed you mentioned your phone for a 3G connection. That setup is meant for a USB modem. If your phone can tether through USB (share a connection through USB), you may try to do that, but it is not guaranteed to work.

The best course would be to buy a 3G modem and leave it plugged to the router as a backup connection.

As an emergency solution, if your phone can work as a Wi-Fi hotspot, using the router as a Wi-Fi extender would indeed allow the local network to access the internet, but wouldn't be ideal because it means you would need to reconfigure it every time you switch between ADSL and 3G, and also it will hog your phone's connection and require you to keep it close to the router.

So there should be an option to tell the router to connect to my phone as a wifi extender, I will look in to this option as a back up.

I did have a look at the setting as an extender and was a bit baffled, will look tomorrow when back at work.

You can't use your phone as a modem this way, you need to get a USB Modem from your cell phone carrier. They should be able to add it to the same data plan as the phone. You should also check to see if the modem they will give you is compatible with the router.
