My computer just told me that a backup and restore I was waiting on to back up to my hard drive had failed. When I opened the hard drive I saw that all of my existing folders had disappeared. Not only did these include photos, etc. they also included huge amounts of work and they just disappeared! Please tell me there is something I can do to retrieve them? I didn't delete them, they disappeared! Help please, I'm freaking out!

First and most importantly do not attempt to write anything else to the backup drive. You can try a free program like Recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva) or Glary Undelele (http://pcsupport.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=pcsupport&cdn=compute&tm=11&gps=51_3_1920_885&f=00&su=p284.13.342.ip_p504.6.342.ip_&tt=4&bt=1&bts=51&zu=http%3A//www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/glary-undelete/). If you search the storage forum for recovery software you may see even better suggestions.
