I have a situation where my dual band USB adapter supplied by my ISP (British Telecom) is not playing ball (connecting on the 2.4 GHz band only) with my desktop setup running W7-64 bit but will connect to the router on the 5 GHz band with my laptop running W7-32 bit. Could the difference in the windows operating system be the key or is something on my desktop hindering the dual band mode? The desktop has no native wireless capability. The dongle is the only method. Also, I notice that it is connecting at 54 Mbps rather than the 130 Mbps for N protocol routers. When I use an old N draft USB single band adapter, its connecting at 130 Mbps.
I have checked the router admin settings and dual band mode is on. The router has a mode where it states how each device is connected to it. It shows that iPads connect on the higher freq band as does my iPhone 5 but my desktop does not. The laptop connects at the higher band if the dongle is connected and the laptop's internal wireless is switched off. It is connecting at the faster speed too.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
