Hello, what is it exactly that makes a graphics card good? Is it the amount of gb's? the id number? I'm just not sure. also, does the memory have to match the motherboard ex: ddr2 to ddr2 or ddr3 to gddr3?

Thanks in advance.

Basically, higher GPU means better (example: GTX 770 is better than GTX 760). The amount of memory depends on what resolution you're using and the number of monitors. If it's only one HD monitor, then 2GB is adequate. If you're using multiple monitors, more memory is better.

Memory types for graphic cards and the RAM on your motherboards are two different things and they don't have to be the same type.

So I could use a GDDR3 GPU on a DDR2 motherboard?

Yes, it doesn't matter. For example, currently I'm using GTX 680 (DDR5) on a DDR3 motherboard :)

In my previous system, I was using DDR2 motherboard coupled with GTS 450, which has DDR5 video RAM also.

Yes - but also realize that with GPU's DDR5 vram is noticebly faster than GDDR3 vram.
