Solution
To be honest with you, your CPU is going to be a bottleneck before 8gb RAM would be when using Maya. If anything, get an fx8320 and 8gb RAM. I talked with an engineering buddy of mine. He uses Maya daily. He said that he has never had RAM related issues and it is always the CPU bottle necking.

He has:
i7 970
8gb 1600mhz RAM
hd5850

He told me that the most important thing is the CPU. He renders decent sized 16-bit scenes and does alot of comping and has never had a RAM issue. You really should spend that money on a better CPU if MAYA is your main goal with this computer.

Thats the thing, I need the 16Gb of ram for the software I am using, if i want to be able to do my classwork at home, and i can always upgrade my GPU at a later point.
