So Here's my system I built in 2008:
2x EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 SLI
ASUS P5N-D LGA 775
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core
16GB RAM 4x ADATA 4GB
HT Omega striker
Hard drives, CD rom, case etc.

Was doing quite well until 3 days ago when it wouldn't power on. Replaced PSU and now it will power but not post. Did the trouble shooting and I think it's the mother board (north bridge had been having overheating issues recently).

Assuming everything else works except motherboard what is the minimum I can buy to get this back up and running.

This is no longer the main computer, so I just have to get it running as cheaply as possible. Preferably stuff I can get off the shelf at a tiger direct or something similar.

Thanks!

Crazy idea, remove all non-required parts form that board and then replace the cmos battery. One of the firmwares had a glitch that if the bios battery was low the board would not power on. The fans and stuff would spin but the board would never power up.

I actually sold my asus p5n-d last year as defective on ebay for $60. That was one of the best featured boards on paper but one of the worst boards I have ever owned in practice. That PCI-e x16 bridge chip under the same wobbly heat sink as the north bridge was insane. That thing would get up to 100. what was that huge heatsink even made out of? I took mine off and polished it, its not copper and its not aluminum, its like white metal, or diecast.

The x16 pci-e bridge was...

You might struggle to find a new replacement motherboard that has an LGA 775 socket, DDR2 RAM and supports both graphics cards. A cursory search on newegg doesn't turn anything up that can help. The problem with switching to newer gen on any one part is it cascades - get a new motherboard, need new processor/RAM.

Drives, CD-rom, chassis and PSU should all be reusable and the graphics cards should work - though not impress - in a modern build.

You might be able to find a used/refurbished part off ebay or something.

The x16 pci-e bridge was completely worthless ontop of it because no card from 2008 was going to come any where close to maxing an 8x pci-e lane. Why bother using the bridge to get 2 16x?

Maybe I am being hard on the board it did run my q9650 at 3.6 and my 2 8800gtx then later 2 gtx470s for around 4 years.
