I recently got an ASUS gtx 550 ti graphics card for an MSI H61M-E23 mainboard (with the required PCIE 2.0 slot). I've installed it properly I believe -- seated securely, connected the aux cable, the fan spins -- but I can't get any display out of the monitor.

I've selected the PEG setting (PCI Express graphics?) in the BIOS as opposed to the IGD setting (Integrated Graphics Device?) but neither setting makes a difference. The monitor will display for either setting but only when the monitor's DVI cable is connected to the onboard DVI output. The system boots up to Win 7 (64 bit) just fine even with a blank screen. I just upgraded the power supply to a 1000 watt monster so that ain't the problem. Nevertheless, I feel like I'm overlooking something simple. What is it? I've seen other accounts of people with the same problem but I've not had any success with the answers. Thanks for any help.

I can't install a driver. The installer tells me that there's no ASUS card. Device Manager also shows no ASUS card.

Thanks. I'll upgrade the Bios and see if that helps. Gonna think on the CMOS reset for a while although I've heard that recommended elsewhere.

You might try that "live update" thing, if it will flash the new BIOS. (not a fan of MSI)

Unless you want, or are use to using a usb drive.

Yeah, I downloaded their Live Update program and it seems to work fine. It identified the mainboard as an MS-7680 which worried me but I figured they ought to know what their own MB is. Anyway, I let it update the bios and pcie drivers and now I'm ready to try getting the graphics card recognized.

One word of caution about Live Update for MSI users: don't use the Total Installer option -- it will add unwanted software to your computer; not malware just stuff you probably don't want. Install any items one at a time under your control.

Tried again with the new graphics card but no luck. I'm wondering if there's another setting in the bios to force the pcie card to override the onboard graphics but there aren't that many settings and I can't find anything promising. I may again try uninstalling the onboard Intel graphics drivers but I did that once before with no success. Plus, I thought most mainboards automatically override the onboard graphics when a new card is installed. Still looking for ideas.

automatically override ~ That was my understanding also (most of the time), if there is no force settings. You might call MSI an ask, but you might get a bunch of "script monkeys" instead of help. Try the card in another computer to make sure it works.
