Hi, at the moment I have a radeon hd 7850hd card oc to 1100mhz and am getting decent performance in bo2. Around 80fps maxed out on 1900x1080. It's been 5 months since I built my machine and with the new games and consoles coming out was wondering if I should upgrade my card for ghosts. I also play a lot of flight simulator and get pretty good performance on that as well. I'm thinking of something preferably under 250 dolores. Some of my friends recently got 770s so that's obviously out of the question. What do ya think? will buying a new card increase my performance substantially or should I stick with my 7850? The magic number in ghosts would be above 90fps maxed out for me

For Ghosts, you'll want a GTX 760 in that price range. Better to jump over to Nvidia so you can turn on the full APEX PhysX settings, available for the first time in a Call of Duty game.

Quote:
"The one example given by Infinity Ward was the enhancement of smoke through the use of APEX Turbulence, a PhysX toolkit that allows artists to quickly and easily bolster existing effects with super-realistic, physically-led particles. With APEX Turbulence, explosions, gunshots and character movement will disrupt smoke clouds, causing them to be realistically manipulated in reaction to the forces exerted. More effects are planned"

Quote:
"New Call of Duty, in comparison, should bring us natural-looking, fully physically simulated volumetric smoke and dust effects with the quality, close to those seen in pre-rendered VFX scenes."

You can download the physx driver for amd cards as well. Didn't they have physx in bo2? Anyways, that was the card I was looking at. What kind of performance would I be getting.

Thanks, how does it handle overclocking? And is it really 50% faster than my card? So ill see like 120fps or something like that?

Physx is nice eye candy, but it should not be a main deciding factor in the purchase of a new gpu as there are still too few games that use it, and a solid intel cpu can give you some of the eye candy.

Always go with price to performance ratio when picking your card.

And my 7850 has about as good as a price:p erformance ratio as you can get. I might just stick with it

I agree, it's a very good card for it's price. If you want to give yourself a bit of a boost later on you can always grab a second 7850 and crossfire your rig.

The most practical and cost effective solution in my opinion.

That whole thing about "too few games use it" is getting old, literally. You only need one good game, and I'm afraid Call of Duty: Ghosts is it. Add in Batman: Arkham Origins and the Witcher 3 upcoming and it's going to be a good season for PhysX gaming.

In any event, even if you didn't play PhysX games, what would make you get a card without it? Guaranteed, you didn't get any better performance or deal than you would have with a GTX 650 Ti Boost. See, I actually think its one of the best reasons to get a particular card, because it's one of the few things that sets them apart.

Old but still relevant. Just because a handful of good new games support it is no reason to replace a perfectly functional newer card that will run the game just fine. It must be nice to have that kind of money to piss away for the sake of unnecessary glitter.

But the 760 is a great card regardless of the physx. It will provide much better performance than his 6850.
The 760 will be relevant for a long time and in a couple of years it will be very cheap to buy another one to SLI. I wouldn't bother crossfiring two 7850's , you will get a performance increase but they are already getting pretty old. It's alot of heat and power for performance slower than some current single cards.

I agree it is a fantastic card that will outperform a 7850. I just think its wasting money to upgrade a newer card so soon.

In terms of Black Ops 2 performance, if you are getting 80+ FPS, then you probably have room to increase your settings. This is what they got at TPU at full settings on an overclocked Haswell system. It's safe to assume that Ghosts will be more demanding than Black Ops 2. If you care about enabling maximum settings, then an upgrade will help in that department. If not, I'm sure you'll be able to play the game on your 7850, either at reduced framerate or at reduced settings and without some of the unique options enabled.
