Confused about cpu temps

Hey there

I know there are about 100000 threads about this already, but I am just wondering if you could help me with knowing what temperatures I should be looking at on CoreTemp and HWMonitor. I have an AMD FX 6300.

At Idle, hwmonitor reads :
TMPIN0 - 23C
TMPIN1 - 37C
TMPIN2 - 27C
And the Package Temp reads : 12C

However, during just 2 minutes of prime25 ( never done it before so i just did blend, plus 6 tests since i have 6 core cpu? ), the TMPIN1 temp shot up to 57C and the package temp to 225C O.O so I ended the test right away.
CoreTemp also read 225C

Can someone please clarify the temps and help me decide if my pc is cool or overheating? I'm trying to decide whether I need a new cpu fan/thermal paste or not :)

Thank You

Well that is not a correct reading, if it was 225c it wouldve died right away. Can you use a program supplied by your motherboard's vendor?

There is Msi Control Center but i've not used it as people have said it's not the best with accuracy. But I could try it
And nope, no fire ... yet xD

I am just confused as to what reading is the actual cpu temp I should be looking at. I highly doubt my cpu idles at 12C, and i have no idea what each of the TMPIN numbers represent. The bios says the cpu temp is 34C but none of the readings match that.

It's just really confusing :/

Well when i open hwmonitor it shows me core temps and a package temp of the cpu, all the tmpin are mobo

hmmmm, well this is hwmonitor at the minute:

Its the package one that shoots up.
Some people have said the TMPIN1 is the cpu temp. But this goes to nearly 80C during the test where as the package stays what I said earlier :S

Scroll a bit to the bottem, below AMD FX-6300 it should list CPU temps

Here it is fully

" alt="" class="imgLz frmImg " />

The bit you're referring to stays around 37C while doing prime then suddenly shoots up to 225C like I said. TMPIN1 goes up to about 70-80C sometimes. But others have said that TMPIN is also the cpu temp.
I just can't see the cpu being 37C during load nor 80C during load so im still at a loss xD

Maybe i have the heatsink loose or something. Or I may just need new thermal paste or something anyway

Use the MSI app to be sure

Ok, I've downloaded control center and at idle it reads 30C which seems more reliable. Have not tested on load yet though.
Bios reads about 34C, but I'm assuming that since no drivers etc have kicked in at bios for power management that bios temps are always slightly higher?

Sounds like that MSI app is correct yeah, you should only use that to read temps ;)
