Laptop won't start up after adding RAM

A while ago I decided I wanted to add more RAM to my current laptop, a Gateway NV5470u that's running Windows 7. After adding the 1 GB of RAM, my laptop refused to start up. I don't remember if there were any flashing lights, but it doesn't even seem to acknowledge the fact that I have pressed the power button, A red light does come on, however, when I plug in the charger, but I can get to further than that. It still refuses to start up even after I have removed the RAM.

Help? My brother says to just give up hope on it, but I'd rather not...
Thanks! :)

I've never had anything like that happen to me on a laptop before

Did your laptop have an "open" RAM slot or were you swapping one (the one(s) that came with the laptop) DIMM for another (your new DIMM(s))? If it was a swap, have you tried putting the original back in and trying to boot?

No, my laptop came with 2 RAM slots, one was occupied by the default stick of RAM, so I put my RAM in the other slot, after which it stopped working :S I tried removing the stick of RAM, but it didn't make any difference. :/

Mine isn't a solution, more a case of exactly the same thing occurring. I had half a GB of RAM in my little Toshiba laptop. It has two RAM slots, both full, on installation for two 512MB cards my computer decided it wouldn't even turn on. You press the power and it sits there like a deer in headlight, no screen, no fan, nothing changes, it doesn't come on at all! If anyone know a solution to this I would be so grateful. It's the second laptop I've been through in two weeks, seem to have really bad luck with them :/
