I have new sata 3 disks that where loaded with Windows 7 64 bit on a motherboard sata 2 only. I am upgrading to a new motherboard with sata 3 controllers. Do I need to reinstall windows 7 to have the sata 3 disks perform as if they where written on a sata 3 controller or will they perform the sata 3 speeds when I reconfigure the motherboard on old sata 2 build even though the disks are sata 3. My windows 7 64bit Ultimate is a retail version. Thank you.

The sata speed only affects how the motherbds chipset 'Talks' to the drives.
To have a chance at being able to boot windows, the Sata controller mode on the new motherbd must match whats on the current one. The 3 modes are IDE/Legacy/Compatability, AHCI, and Raid. You really want AHCI but we can work on changing that after you get the system running.

The issue you are going to run into is the change in drivers. Obviously the new motherbd has different integrated hardware which often uses different drivers. While its best to perform a clean install of windows, you can often get by without going thru all that.

Another issue you may run into is activating windows. If your version of windows is an OEM version then it was tied to the...

Whats the old motherbd and whats the new one?
What windows version are you using?

Thank you Popatim, My old mb is a p7p55d asus and going with a MB ASROCK|H87M PRO4 LGA1150 R. You answered my question on the way the mb's read and write to disks, so If I get all the drivers setup It should be a sata 3 6gb/sec transfer. I also have a retail Ultimate windows 7 as I change things constantly being an old MCP CNE 5 and A+, but retired now. need to be retrained I guess. Thanks again.
