I have a Microserver G7 N36L and I host my nas OS on it (amongst other OSs as I'm running them virually). with your built it yourself version the quad core is a huge overkill for a nas. I have a low end AMD dual core in mine and the usage is never noticeable.. like under 10% CPU. I'd suggest if you're building it yourself and therefore have the flexibility of parts to go for a lower powered setup like a pentium or at the very tops an i5 with a lower TDP.
Or store bought HP Microserver G8 with Intel G2020
hmm home server what are you usign this for? almost no one needs a home server your better off with a NAS depending on what you want ot do and they are cheaper usually
