So I've had my GTX 780 for less than a week now and I just noticed this whine during some games (Mass Effect 2, Black Ops 2) I can get a little coil whine, at least that's what I think its called.

When I play Mass Effect 2 I hear this whine depending on what direction I look at/what part of the game I am in. At one point I was looking at a door w/o coil whine then if I looked slightly to my left my 780 begins to start this whine. I have my case sitting on my desk EXACTLY to the left of my keyboard with the side panel open and I can slightly hear it. Its not annoying because it is not a constant thing but I am worried if this is needs to be RMA'd.

In Black Ops 2 it seems to almost be a continious whine but its not as loud as the one I hear in ME2.

I have yet to hear it in other games. I tried Sims 3 because my previous HD 7850 had a whine. The 780 didn't have a whine on Sims.

My settings through EVGA PRECISION X for my 780 are:

Power Target: 106%
Temp Target: 80 degrees C
GPU clock offset: +100
Mem clcok offset: +150

voltage is still stock and I have a custom fan curve so 80 degrees C is 100% fan speed even though I barely hit over 70 degrees C

What PSU do you have? Not sure what fps you're going for, but some people just cap their fps in Precision X at 60fps, and that can do the trick.

My evga acx cooler did the same thing the first week I got it, but I haven't heard a single whine since so I wouldn't worry about it. I've had my card for about a 2 months now. I actually ordered a 2nd card for sli did the same thing once in a while mostly during benchmarks but after about a week again it completely stopped

It's a Corsair TX 750. If I put the 780 at low fan speed (like 30%) during the game I can hear it real good. To me sounds like it's the GPU,

Also I haven't messed with the framerate cap so idk if that also plays a role.

It's worth a shot. Do you have V-sync enabled?

EDIT: if it's real bad, you should RMA it.

Its at MAX framerate.
I do not have vsync enabled and its not loud at all. Just something that I heard.

Hey so after quite some time of messing around, I found out its my PSU that is whining. My GPU is fine.

That's pretty common. Your PSU is a pretty decent one, but it can happen on almost any unit, no matter how nice. So what you do depends on how much you care about the noise. You could try RMA, but there's no guarantee it won't happen with the next one. Some people put glue or something similar on the coils to dampen the sound: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1...

It's up to you how much time/money you want to spend, or if you can ignore it. There's probably nothing wrong the with PSU itself.
