I have another thread open that started with a previous problem, to which I now am stuck at a different spot. Ultimately I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as dual boot option with Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite. Scanning my partitions on Ubuntu's Gparted shows that I may have a corrupted or damaged NTSF(C: ). To make a long story short, I can't succesfully run chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r (C: ) I type it in command, and I get cannot lock current drive .....volume in use etc. Do you want to run on restart. I select Y, and restart. BUT nothing happens on reboot. I've read that antivirus program could be the culprit. I've done a number of things to no avail. Finally I am at msconfig>run as admin>services tab>uncheck avgids and avg watchdog>click ok, and restart. But they are both checked and running again! I did , however, succesfully disable AVG related files in Startup tab, but services not staying disabled. I'm not even sure I am on the right track. You can see I am way in far left field from where I started.

Solution

the restart thing doesn't always work. Go download a windows 7 disc from...

Actually, it's proving to be fairly complicated to fully remove AVG. I can use add/remove in Windows, but if afterwards I try chkdsk, and it still doesn't work, I won't be confident that it's no longer antivirus causing problems. I can't seem to find a good antivirus remover for 64bit avg 2013.

This link is dated 2008. But still I opened task manager and tried to find avgtray.exe, but I think 2013 version is labeled differently. I picked an avg.exe file and tried to kill it, but got "access denied". I couldn't find an option to select and run as admin.

I came across this earlier this eve, but my version number isn't listed here. I can't remember the specific version number I have installed, and I'm not near my pc right now, but I googled the version number earlier, and it came up as a paid version, but I know I didn't pay for it. (I'm paying for it now, tho ;)
I was tempted to run the 64bit 2013 listed here anyways, but I don't want to screw things up.
Thanks.

Again, in direct response. It's not Pirated! I'm not sure why anyone would pirate a security program, seems kind of counter intuitive. But at any rate... it's not pirated. I am simply saying that after reading the same link that you sent me, I could not find my version number. So I googled my version number, and it comes up as a paid version. I installed AVG off of AVG's website as AVG 2013 FREE edition. That's why I' m confused as to why a google search shows it as a paid version. The version number is 2013.0.3408. Perhaps this is only a trial? But I installed it in 2012, and it's still active?!?

Ok, So I used the AVG remover kit. I had found another link that referred to removing AVG 2013 Free, and it took me to this same link that Scout 03 posted. So I went for it, even though the version numbers did not match. I'm honestly not sure how to ENTIRELY check to make sure ALL files are gone, but I can say that the avgids agent and avg watchdog are no longer in the msconfig service tab. HOWEVER, I just tried to Run chkdsk /f in command, and it still did not work. I have no idea what is going on here.

Had to read your question a few times. You can't chkdsk /f an active drive, it can't lock the drive to fix problems because the drive is in use. It's like wanting to take apart and check an engine while the car is running.

Grab your windows 7 or windows 8 disc, startup recovery options and you will get a command prompt there that you can run chkdsk /f from. It has nothing to do with antivirus or anything, just you can't fix the drive you are using currently from your windows.

I understand that you can't run during , but I thought you could on next restart? It asks you if you want to run on next reboot. I don't have the windows 7 disc.

the restart thing doesn't always work. Go download a windows 7 disc from digitalriver burn it to a disc or to a usb key using the windowsusb tool found through google and run that, or hirems boot disc, lots of options.

I downloaded from digital River, and placed it on a usb. Then I installed updated windows 7. I'm now able to run chkdsk /f , which is awesome. However , there's no problems in the chkdsk log ,yet ubuntu Still says ntsf is corrupt. At any rate, I consider this thread solved. Can you tell me how to mark it as solved? I'm not seeing it on mobile.
