So I have been having trouble lately with my new PC and have had to turn it off 6 times using the power button in 3 days! Now I know its bad habit and I plan on not doing it but had to these couple of times. My mobo is designed to protect from instantly turning off and it takes about the same time I do a proper shutdown when I do it with a button. These are the only times on planning to ever do this but do you think I already cause damage? And out of curiosity what hardware can be damaged?

Solution
Windows XP and newer (don't know about *nix, mac os, or older versions of windows) allow you to specify what the power button does, and I think by default it does the same thing as using the shutdown option from the start menu, unless you hold it down.
No real damage should have been done, most damage would happen within the hardrive if anything. So I would say avoid it, but doing it a few times is by no means bad. A friend of a friend that I play games with always shuts his pc down by the power button, hes only 14 and wont listen to reason, and after a few months of it hey presto, his pc wont boot again.
