Nas went bad, drives are still good. How can I recover the data?

I had a DLink 323 NAS that just took a dump. The drives are fine, so I popped them in my PC. My idea was to copy the files to my PC, then move the drives into my new Synology NAS for formatting, before copying the files back over to the new NAS. But I am having a hell of a time getting these files from my NAS drives.

They were configured in Raid 1, so they should just be mirrored copies? But while windows sees the disks and their partitions, it wont allow me to access any of the data.

I found some software online that is asking for absurd license fees to extract the data. Is that my only route? Please help!!!!

Most probably the drivers were formatted with some Linux-type file system. Boot your PC with some live Linux, and check what you see.

Edit: You can also try http://www.ext2fsd.com - Windows driver for EXT2/3/4 file systems.

The ext2fsd program worked great! I had problems at first, then realized I needed to also install a .sys file to allow it to mount Ext3/4 partitions. After a reboot my drive showed up and I am currently extracting my data. Thanks so much!!!

I had a ext2 disk (NAS drive Lacie), and managed to rebuild the disk using Raise Data Recovery: http://www.ufsexplorer.com/rdr_index.php

The Raise solution used 50 minutes on my 600 GB disk.

In order to have the raw disk appear I installed:

http://ext2-volume-manager.en.lo4d.com/

This program will assign a drive letter to the usb connected disk.

Of safety reasons I first created an Image Copy of the whole disk using Stellar Phoenix, I copied the damaged disk sector by sector, all data was copied to a new disk. I performed the Raise Data Recovery on this new disk.
