Will my newer processor work in my old desktop?

I have an oldish desktop (about six years) and am looking to squeeze a little bit more performance out of it to allow my friends to join me in Planetside 2 when they come over. The desktop works but it is very slow when under a heavy load. I recently swapped the original heat sink with an extra but much newer heat sink I had laying around. While I was doing this I noticed the socket for the cpu is visually identical to the one in my much newer desktop that currently holds my AMD FX-4100 using an am3+ socket. I plan on upgrading my cpu to one of AMD's much faster ones and my curiosity is simply whether my old cpu (the 4100) would work in the old desktop or not. If the speed of the cpu is an issue for any reason I'm not opposed to underclocking or doing whatever else it takes to make it work short of putting money into it. The cpu sticker on the front of the old desktop says AMD Athlon 64, if you need any other information regarding the desktop to figure out this question just let me know and I can find it. I'm not very well versed in what differentiates socket types in desktops so I'm not sure if looking like am3+ makes it am3+ or if am3 can look the same so please forgive me if this question is something that has been answered before

Without knowing what motherboard your old system has, it's hard to say what socket is being used for sure as different Athlon 64 chipsets used different sockets. That said, from what I can find, the Athlon 64 X2's (the most recently manufactured version of the Athlon line) used the AM3 socket, which is definitely not compatible with the new processors using the AM3+ sockets. If you know the motherboard or computer model of your old system, I can answer this for sure, but my guess is that regardless of what it is, you won't be able to use an FX series processor with it.
