16GB 1333Hz vs 8GB 1600Hz vs 4GB 1866Hz

Solution

8GB is okay, andt 2x4GB dual channel run well. And 1866 doesn't benefit you much in games. It's more for windows improvements and movie editing/rendering...etc. Same thing with 16bg+ of RAM, you'll never use it-ever...

It's for gaming mostly but when I'm not gaming I'm multitasking.. streaming videos -- Converting files (like avi to mpeg)-- downloading -- skype -- and all sorts of stuff.. I can stream videos and pause it then on Skype chatting with my friends and downloading at the same time.. I know most people do this..

I have FX6300, GA990FXA-UD3 rev. 04, sapphire HD6870, G.Skill Ripjaws X 8GB(4x2) 1333.

Should I buy 8GB more or sell it and get 8GB (4x2) 1600 or a single stick 4GB 1866?

Thanks guys.. I really appreciate it.

It'll maybe add 2-3FPS. 8GB seems to be the go to for todays PC's, for more room, since the higher games take ~3-4GB memory.
But if you'll play older games, for ex-skyrim, fallout 3...etc. They're limited to 2GB regardless unless you mod em ;)
If I were you I'd get 2x4GB at 1600 or 1866 if there's a deal. Keep a look at the timings though you want to look for a reliable brand with good timings.

@envy14tpe - I have a huge plan of OCing it but not this time (I'm afraid and no OC experience but will inquire soon on how to OC my GA990FXA-UD3 rev. 04). This is also the reason why I want to have more RAM than what I already have -- will I benefit from more RAM if I OC my FX6300?

@Jake - Yes, I can still afford 8GB 1333 more. If I can squeeze 2 - 3 FPS more then I'd love to have 16GB. What are the timings do you think is best for me also what brand can you recommend? If I can't benefit much from having having 1866 then should I add 8GB 1333 more or sell it and get 8GB 1600? (No worries about the price) Also, what about OCing 1333 -- 16GB (4GBx4) -- will it better than 8GB 1600?

Additional question: What's the difference between 1.2v and 1.5v? which is better?

I'm sorry if I ask too many questions, I just want what's best for me since my next upgrade will be in the next 2-3 years.

Thank you guys for answering my questions.. I appreciate it.

I don't think adding any RAM will improve your fps.

You should overclock that fx-6300 cuz you got a great mobo for overclocking....assuming you got a CoolerMaster EVO or something as good.

RAM that is lower than 1.5V is slower RAM. It's mostly power savings but in a big rig you won't save any money in doing so but you will have slower RAM if you get 1.35V. 1.2 or 1.35V RAM is great for laptops but don't buy it for desktops. Stick with 1.5V!

Don't OC the RAM. You are going to cause more harm then good and you won't really see any difference. However, if you overclock your CPU you'll notice a huge bump and in fps.

@envy - I'm still using the stock cooler; however, maybe next month I'll buy H100i to start my very first OC. Thanks for the info about the 1.2v vs 1.5v. I'm sorry but I didn't understand this "...if you overclock your CPU you'll notice a huge bump and in fps..." Thanks.

Don't waste your money on a H100i. Why? It'll cost $100. You could get better performance from your system by getting a fx-8320 or fx-8350 and a $30 cooler.

The fx-6300 is a good CPU and it excels when you overclock it. At stock settings, the i3s are better, but they can't be overclocked. Essentially you increase the max speed of your CPU in a way it is designed to be done.

If you overclock the fx-6300 you will get an increase in fps when you play games. You'll get better performance in games more so than if you had faster RAM.

Thanks for the heads up.. I'll probably not get H100i then.. 'IF' I OC my CPU in the very near future then my goal is to reach between 4Ghz to 4.4GHz-ish that is why I want to get H100i. I don't want to OC using the stock cooler even though some say I can, I don't want to put more heat on my CPU specially that I don't air-conditioned room.. anyway, thank you very much for the information, @envy.

I'll get back to you guys as soon as I get a concrete decision about my RAM inquiries. All of your inputs will help decide.. Again, thank you guys!!!

If you overclock the cpu, NEVER use the stock cooler. A $30 cooler will good your fx-6300 a great overclock.

To clarify: You have 4 sticks of 2GB or 2 sticks of 4GB? If you have 2 sticks of 4GB 1333 then you don't need more RAM. If you want to spend $60 then use it to get SSD or something else.

Woah, I didn't say to add 8GB more, especially since you will not use it. Adding Memory doesn't increase FPS. It's just adding more memory, which games don't use much of. ~3-4GB for the latest games. I was saying higher bandwidth will, but it really wont make a huge impact on gaming. Upgrading 1333->1866 will have improved windows performance and very slight gaming improvement. But you don't really need it.

Also, if you're going to upgrade your CPU, or overclock it, may I ask what GPU you have?
If you're running on stock air, and not overheating-a slight OC should be ok, but an aftermarket cooler will do better, or a new CPU. But you probably won't improve much as a new or additional GPU-and only if your PSU allows for it.

UPDATE: My 8GB (4GBx2) 1333Mhz isn't working (first stick doesn't even go to BIOS settings, 2nd stick giving me lots of error messages plus random BSOD -- good thing I still have my 1GB 1333Mhz Elite Team, it saved me). Want to RMA it but the price of shipping it is almost same as buying new kits. I'm going to buy new RAM next week.

Question: Which of these RAMs do you think is better?

1. 8GB(2x4GB) G.Skill RIpjawsX BLUE DDR3 1866 CL8 - $88+
2. 8GB(2x4GB) G.Skill Ares Blue DDR3 1600 CL9 - $85+
3. 8GB(2x4GB) G.Skill Ares Blue DDR3 1866 CL9 - $83+
or
4. 2 kits (2GBx4) -- 4GB(2x2GB) G.Skill RIpjawsX BLUE DDR3 1866 CL9 - $50 x 2.

All of the kits are under my budget. I'd like to know which is better.

Thank you so much!!!

@Jake, sorry, I misunderstood your message. I have Sapphire HD 6870. I'm not buying new CPU, I'm happy with my FX6300 and I'm going to OC once I have a CPU cooler.

* I'm also buying a CPU cooler and my choices are:
- Corsair Hydro Series H55
- Cooler Master Seidon 120M
- Cooler Master Seidon 120XL
- DeepCool ICE BLADE PRO V2.0

** By the way, I'm from the Philippines and the price of the RAM is just my estimation from peso to dollar. Everything is expensive here.

That's ok. And I just went from stock cooler to Tuniq-4 thermal paste with a kraken x60-modded my case to make it fit, sitting on top of my case. Quiet and my 8120 temp went down from 45*C idle to 20*C :D (haven't prime95'ed it yet.
I'd go with the 1866 RAM, but if your PC worked fine before-maybe upgrade your GPU? It affects FPS and stuff the most.
