Ethernet Cable not being recognized!

Okay guys, I am getting REALLY annoyed with this as for 2 days I have been looking for a solution to my problem.. yet I havn't found anything useful so I turn to you guys! (the pros ;) )

Anyhow, here is my problem:

I have been using my laptop on wifi connection for a year now, and never tried to use an ethernet cable with it... So, a few days ago I bought a long ethernet cable and tried connecting via the ethernet for a more stable internet connection.

My laptop is a toshiba satellite p850 model # PSPKAU-02Q00E
64 Bit (windows 7)

SO, I plug the ethernet cable in and it didn't recognize that I had plugged it in.
I looked online and some1 said to unplug every wire and take the battery out the back and leave it for an hour.. (which i did)
It worked and once i put it back in it recognized the ethernet cable and I ran a speed test and had over 83mb/s dl and 30+mb/s up which I was very happy with!...

Then later that day IT DROPPED OFF THE GRID! My computer decided not to want to recognize that there was the cable plugged in at all... and I am not going to unplug the battery for an hour every time I want to use my laptop!

The ethernet cable itself is fine as I tried on my freinds laptop when he came over and it picked up the cable RIGHT AWAY and was stable...

NOW, WHAT IVE TRIED is:

I have also tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing the newest 1 and NOW I HAVE A PROBLEM...When I go into Device Manager I see a Yellow Triangle with an exclamation point inside of it... I right click and try to upgrade driver software and "search the web" but it comes back with a messege saying that "it cant find any"...

So when I go into network and internet I now only see my wireless connection, NO LAN CONNECTION...

Note, BEFORE i uninstalled my driver, I did indeed see a LAN connection in here, THOUGH AFTER I re-installed the driver, I dont a LAN connection...

Any help would be greatly appreciated ..

NOTE READ THIS!!!:::

I have done a system restore so undo everything that Ive done with the drivers SINCE I tried playing with it... as I only seemed to have made it worse..

NOW, it is back to where I can actually see "local Area Connection" in the network connections again... though it has a big red X on it.. and it says "network cable unplugged" and under that is says "realtek PCIe Fe Family Controller"

So, ANY HELP from this point on is MUCH appreciated!

The first thing I would try is to do a restore from a date that precedes your driver update. At least that should get you back to where you started from. Next I would clean the contacts on the Ethernet jack. If that jack has never been used before, there could be some gunk on the wires which don't allow for a good connection. I know you tried the cable on a different computer, but I would still try another cable to be sure. I've had cables in the past (especially home made ones) that have had intermittent connections issues.

Hello, dfryda Thanks for your response, Good idea about the system restore... I am doing it as I write this
Once It is done Ill see if it's back to the way it was...

Also, I DID indeed try another cable, before even buying this new 1!
I tried the 1 I use to connect my xbox 360 with ... And had the "plug in an ethernet cable" problem... So I said, hmm this cable might be bad and tried another I had... SAME thing.. So i ended up buying this cable which is giving me the same thing....

(thats 3 wires)

And Yeah, I just tried again with my other laptop and it recognized it right off the bat...

I am hardwired to my desktop and xbox.. so I know the router is fine.

Ill post again shortly once this restore is done.. to let you all know where exactly I am with this problem..

An extremely similar case I have found is this though we have different computers.

P.S. this ethernet cable is 50 ft and cost me over $45 so It's not homemade and certainly not cheap =p

okay, so I have done the restore and I am back to where I have started before I touched anything..

Once again it isn't finding the ethernet cable (BUT, now I do see the "local area connection" in network connections..) (with a big red X on it saying .. "network cable unplugged"..
and undernearth that it says "Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller"

It is "enabled" btw

Any help from this point on is MUCH appreciated!!

I was reading through that tread you posted, and like you said it's the same Realtek PCIe controller. Sounds like that card may have died on you. If nothing else works, I had a notebook that did the same thing and I ended up buying an Ethernet to USB adapter that worked great, plus I could use it to diagnose issues on other computers. Sorry I don't have a magic bullet for you.

NO! You MUST, MUST I SAY have a MAGIC BULLET FOR ME!

(Joking!)

That's funny you say that.. I was actually going to go up to bestbuy today and get 1 (ethernet to USB adapter) BUT I didn't understand why it'd work then... AND STILL DONT GET IT... so I held off and didn't get 1... cuz I figured It wouldn't help!

BUT if your telling me that it WILL indeed work, then I have NO PROBLEM with spending ... like $20-30? Hopefully? lol

Care to explain why it'd work though? Im curious!
Thanks alot man..

The reason it works is because you are dealing with a totally different set of drivers and hardware. You don't have too, but to keep things simple, go into the hardware manager and disable that old Ethernet card before you install your USB to Ethernet adapter and you should be ready to rock!

Alright, I shall buy an adapter tomorrow then and will post back here to tell you what happens..

I will disable the lan connection before I plug in the adaptor tomorrow as you suggested from device manager..

Also is there any "installation" or is it more of a "plug and ur good" or "plug and it'll auto update" or w/e...? or am I required to do anything..? Will it promt me? just dont wana mess it up!

Hey there,
Might be you have to have your LAN connection enabled.
To do this .... go to Start, then Control Panel, then click on Network Connections...here u can see LAN ..right click on it and choose ENABLE..

if it is already enabled but u cant still connect, right click on the icon again, choose Properties and see if the device is working..

If you cant see LAN connection on Network Connections..You must set it up..
