I'm building a gaming pc for me an the kids iv pretty much made my mind up on a 7850 graphics card but I totally lost on what CPU to go for as it seems everyone has there own favourites between amd and Intel I want the pc to last a year or two before upgrading it and was hoping for a little advice on what to do. This is my first build so as much information advice as possible please iv built loads of pc on parts picker and thats not help much my price range is up £600 thanks for reading and any help

Yes that's true. As an example, here's how a recent "heavy" games loads CPU's:-
Intel - http://gamegpu.ru/images/stories/Test_GPU/Action/ARMA%20III%20Alpha/test/arma%203%20proz%20intel.jpg

AMD - http://gamegpu.ru/images/stories/Test_GPU/Action/ARMA%20III%20Alpha/test/arma%203%20proz%20amd.jpg

The more cores...

For me it's an easy answer, choose an afordable quad core processor from intel (works better for gamming and i will choose 4 cores CPUs to give some space for processing power at this point):

If you are going to oveclock, i5-3570K for the unlocked multiplier (220$)
If you are going to use stock speeds in the processor i5-3350P (180$)

I was leaning towards the fx 6300 but I keep reading so many people say that 6 cores for gaming is not needed sorry I'm completely new to this so I'm trying to get as much information before I dive in a waste a load of money I want something that will be on par with the ps4 il be playing rpg mmo that sort of thing the kids will want the AAA games to play good with at least 60fps on 1080p thanks for your replys

The more cores, the less each core scales (just 8% usage for some of AMD's Octo-cores). Personally, I'd go for a fast quad-core - either a 4670K or a 3570K if you can stretch to that. As others mentioned, an i5-3350P / i5-3470 are more budget choices (that can actually be mildly OC'd to 3.7/4.0GHz respectively with a decent motherboard). That should fit your budget if you definitely want a 7850 card.

MMORPG's are definitely more CPU limited than other games, so a faster CPU & medium range GFX card probably makes more sense than a 7970 + weak CPU. If you struggle with framerates due to a weak GFX card, you can usually turn down the settings from Ultra to High or even Medium (ie, equivalent to "normal" for most console games), but if your CPU struggles, then there's very little you can do, especially on MMORPG's.

Usually at gamming anything over 4 cores is overkill and don't improve anything, it's preferable lower cores and faster clock speed over more cores with lower clock speed.

Also in my experience (and reviews) most games tend to favour Inter architecture over Amd.

Btw, the GPU you choose is not able to give 60 fps at BF3, its currently at half of that, about 30fps and any CPU that you put will not help in that point, for that you will need a fater GPU (7970)

Ok so lower faster core speed over loads of slower speed cores I can see how that make sense dose anyone think because the next gen game consoles have 6 core CPU the developers will be making games that use more then 4 Cores. If I go with a 4 Core and I'm overclocking it what's the best CPU to go with thanks for all the information it's a real help

I also vote FX 6300. FX 8320 if you can afford it. Games are starting to take advantage of more cores. This will only continue as the next gen consoles will be sporting 8 core AMD chips. Console ports will be changed very little from their console counterparts due to the new console running what essentially is a custom AMD PC APU. Programmers tend to be lazy, if they make a game take advantage of 6 cores of the 8 core APU in the console, it will not change when it is ported to PC.

FX 6300 + HD 7970 will go MUCH farther in gaming than Intel + HD 7850.

The GPU is the most important component in a gaming PC. If you're not going to overclock, I would recommend the FX 6350 just because it's more clockspeed, which always helps. However, it isn't a deal breaker either way.

The FX 6350 runs about on par with the i5's from Intel for FAR less money, read Tom's Hardware's K10 vs. FX comparison, and they toss in some Intel's for comparison. They concluded the FX 6350 was the most CPU for the money out there right now, with the FX 6300 being right behind it.

That would be my choice, and I develop games for a living.

That's a factory overclocked FX 8350 with Turbo Core v3. You're better off buying the 8350 over the 9570.
