Just got a new computer from a gaming company call avatar. The model is Lion. I downloaded avast antivirus and got a black scream on boot up. Non of any of the solutions I've found helped. I was able to get my pc to start and run normally after restarting it a couple of times. Since the problem never got resolved I uninstalled avast. Now I get the black screen every time on boot up. I started my computer in safe mode and did a system restore. Still getting the black screen. I can move my cursor in the black screen and that is it. I can't even ctrl alt del. any thoughts?

Problem arose because W8 provides Antivirus in Windows Defender (Incorporates Security Essentials) and it clashes with 3rd party antivirus. Does Avatar provide any Recovery Media? Perhaps a Recovery Partition? Looks like you're going to have to Reset or Re-install Windows for which you'll at least require a Recovery disk....

I have a recovery disc.
I've tried just about everything with it. When I tried to reset my pc it says "a required drive partition is missing" and I get a similar message with anything I else I do...

Guess you don't have a Recovery Partition then. Best contact Avatar for advice, probably need full recovery disks which include Windows 8. Meanwhile if your Recovery Disk gets you to the Troubleshoot Menu / Advanced Options, try the Command Prompt to run SFC.
sfc /scannow then Enter.

I have a laptop Compaq nx9600 that came with Windows XP. I purchased Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 in December 2012 and installed it. Everything was perfect until I upgraded it to Windows 8.1 from Windows Store. I started to get the blank screen with mouse cursor problem.

Well, I managed to bypass the blank screen with mouse cursor and got to windows.

When you get to the black screen, unplug the power cord from the PC not from the wall, wait 10 or 20 seconds plug it back in and turn the computer back on.
* If unplugging and plugging back the power cord does not work, try to make it get in to sleep or hibernate mode and wake it up. That should take you to the login screen so you can access the Control Panel. On my laptop I just close the lid wait for it to go to sleep mode, then I open it and viola! I get the login screen. I enter my password and that’s it.

When it let you go into windows, do the following:
1.- Open Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options
2.- From the left menu, click on “Choose what the power buttons do”
3- Click on “Change settings that are currently unavailable”
4.- At the bottom of that screen, under “Shutdown settings”, uncheck the “Turn on fast startup (recommended)” option.
5.- Click on the “Save changes” button.
Wait one minute, shut it down, wait one minute and turn it back on.

That worked for me. I do not get the black screen with the mouse arrow any more.

* Remember, if unplugging and plugging back the power cord does not work, try to make it get in to sleep or hibernate mode and wake it up. That should take you to the login screen so you can access the Control Panel.
