I used to work with an ASUS M4A785-M and 2 GB RAM VDATA VD2U800B2G6-B DDR2 800 2GX16
wishing to upgrade the RAM I installed a 2 GB Kinston KVR800D2N6/2G which I found in the list of compatible RAMs in the M4A785-M User Guide

each of the RAMS (old and new one) is recognized by the (upgraded) BIOS when placed in the 1st socket, but none of them is recognized when placed in the 2nd socket

so, I cant' get more than 2GB of RAM

what's wrong? thanks a ;ot for your help

Hello Albert,

You can try troubleshooting by installing memory individually on the second slot, leaving the first slot open. If no modules work individually then the issue might be a bad slot.

Good luck!

As per Asus official site (source), your mobo has 4 DIMM slots.

Have you tried the memory sticks in other slots? Try the sticks as A1 & B1, since you have 2 nos memory stick.

Do you have the latest BIOS, check that first, if so try resetting CMOS then put sticks in slots 1 -3 and try, if not joy put 1 stick in slot 1 and boot to BIOS, raise DRAM voltage to 1.55, save exit, shutdown then install second stick in slot 3 and try.

thanks a lot to all of you who sent answers and suggestions
I tried to apply them, but I must confess that I am new in upgrading RAM...

- placing RAM in A1 and B1 does not help; only 2 GB are recognized

- placing one RAM in B1 only starts a long series of beeps...
and placing the other RAM in B1 as well gives the same result
so, I presume that B is a bad slot; correct?

- I did not try yet to reset the CMOS; will that allow me to use slots A1 and A2? and how do I reset CMOS? following the procedure shown on page 1-19 of the M4A785-M User Guide (clearing RTC RAM)?

sorry if my question look stupid to specialists like you!
