2 Processors better than 1

Hi,

I am looking at buying a new computer for 3d studio max and video editing. My question is what would be faster : 2 x Intel Xeon X5650 2.66GHz or 1 x Intel Xeon E5 2687W 3.1GHz

Really depends on what you are running. Having the 2 processors rather than 1 E5 will give you more threads with a higher bandwidth per thread allocation given multiple banks per processor.

If you are running more than 24 threads, the 2xXeon X5650 will be faster. For a single thread benchmark though the E5 will win by a small margin.

I would say go for the single processor option. SMP motherboards are a pain, and the excess fans/power use isn't really worth in my opinion.. but its up to you.

For a render box, the 2 processors may be the way to go though, since 3D Max and other video rendering software should be able to take advantage of it, but I would check the specs of those applications to see if they really can.

EDIT: You can see some interesting benchmarks: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/xeon-e5-2687w-benchmark-review,3149-8.html

Hard to say without benchmarking your specific usage.

On the one hand the 2 processors have 33% more threads available, but are 17.5% lower clock rate (in GHz). The 2 processors also have the QPI link (communucation link between the chips), which will add in a little overhead (very minor though in 2 CPU setups).

The end result, is that it is possible that a workload that fully taxes both setups would end up completing first on the 2 CPU setup, mainly because it has more threads that are not that much slower. On the other hand if it is not a fully taxing load, then it is likely the 1 CPU setup would finish faster as it has a higher clock rate. All will come down to your usage. See if you can organise a trial first.
