Hi,

I have one of these built in 2005 and my daughter inherited it last year. I have upgraded it's RAM to 8GB and OS to Windows 7 Professional. Even though the MS upgrade web site confirmed that I can load the 64 bit version, I was never able to (kept hanging) and had to settle for running it at 32 bit.

I have read several of the existing threads on upgrading the CPUs on these but I was wondering if anyone can advise me if I can be more drastic by putting in an Ivy Bridge i3-225 CPU with a new and matching motherboard?

This way, there should be no performance issue and will last my daughter till she finishes high school.

Thank you very much for your help.

The C2D is for the old MB.

i3 and LGA1155 MB don't use the BTX format, it use ATX format. For the PSU inside the dell, you can open up the case to see, if the 24pin power cable long enough then you can use it. I know some of dell PC the 24pin power cable is very short. Usually the 24pin cable will be about 500mm.
You need know a little bit about your PC, it has the LGA775 socket and 945G chipset, so it's compatible processors are LGA775 cpu, also no all the LGA775 CPU ican support 64-bit OS, here is the link for the list. http://ark.intel.com/products/27720/Intel-82945G-Memory-Controller

If you want the top CPU maybe C2D E6600/E6700. And you can put the Ivy Bridge i3 with new MB into that case too, because the case is BTX format. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BTX_%28form_factor%29 ).

So you need buy the i3 with the new MB, case, DDR3 RAM PSU, but you can use the old DVD/CD drive, HDD.

Thank you cin19 for the links and quick information. But you lost me there with regard to the C2D E6600/E6700 being the top cpu.

Are you suggesting that to accomodate the i3, compatible MB, DDR3 RAM, compatible PSU, I will need to buy a new BTX case to house everything? And given the low power usage of the i3, do you think I will need to replace the current PSU too? Thank you again for your help.
