I currently have a GTX 670, and am considering upgrade options. The GTX 780 is the best option in the 700 series, but the $650 price tag is making me look before I leap. Is the performance increase in the 780 worth that much money? Or would I be better off waiting for the 870 next year?

while it most certainly is an upgrade and might give you the edge in some games its not worth a $650 price tag over your current card.

a suitable upgrade would likely be either the gtx 790 when it comes out (so far its mostly just speculation) or at least a mid level...
It's worth it if you have a reason to use it, if you are at 1080p I wouldn't bother. I use 1080p (limited to it because of 3D), went from 670 to 780, benchmarks show galactic leaps in framerate, but 90% of games are pretty much the same. The only games that can make use of it are the newer and super demanding games like Crysis and Metro.

If you are at 1440p or above, thats where the 780 starts to make sense. I've used it quite alot at 1440p for downsampling, FPS doesn't really take a hit from what I've seen.

Well.. the 670 is good enough for another year, if you ask me. It is still a very good card for 1080p monitor.

If you are having problem with it, then overclock it to achieve even better performance.

But the 670 should be enough for another year if you ask me.
