heat issue with AMD A10-6800k in small case

I'm building a box with the following, and ran into an APU heat problem.

AMD A10-6800k APU
Gigabyte GA-F2A85XN-WIFI mini-ITX board
2x4GB DDR3-1600 RAM
Lian-Li PC-Q07B case
Corsair CX430 PSU

The fit is extremely tight. After putting the PSU in as the last step, it wouldn't power on. After taking the PSU out but leaving everything connected, it turned on. Put the PSU back in, and power on. The box was very quiet, but shuts down after a few minutes. Took the psu out again and waited a couple of minutes, powered on and went into the BIOS. The cpu fan was blowing hard and the temp was over 80C! Even with the psu out of the case, so there's nothing over the MB, after about 10 minutes the temp stayed around 65C.

My guess is that there are at least a couple of possible problems:
- apu probably not put on correctly? my son mounted it on the MB before I got home. Wonder if the heat transfer to the HS/fan is less than ideal.
- when the psu is in the case it snag the cpu fan wire so it wasn't on.

Anything else that may be contributing to the problem? I'm wondering if I should get a low profile fan, but there's a company selling a system with the same apu and case, but there's no mention of 3rd party cpu fan. (I probably will do it anyway to get lower noice.)

Anyone had experience building with the same/similar APU in the same case? Would very much appreicate any help!

This is a tough one.

My biggest problem is trying to determine why the PSU wouldn't turn on inside the unit the first time.

The bios can cause a great deal of stress on some CPUs for one reason or another so it would be interesting to know what the temps would be in Windows.

It also wouldn't hurt to get some new thermal paste and re-attach the heatsink.

I would start by re-applying thermal paste and the heatsink.

Then, I would look at ventilation, you need some fans moving airflow through the case.

Last thing I would do, is put the PSU in and ensure the CPU fan is well connected to ensure that there are no issues with snags, etc. There is a good possibility that the PC wouldn't boot if the CPU fan connection is not well connected.

I've re-seated the heatsink and fan. With the case open and psu out (otherwise I can't even see the MB), the BIOS showed the cpu temp going up to 65C in ~5 minutes, and then stays there. I tried looking up normal idle temp for the APU, and saw quite a few complaints about the temp. Interestingly, on Anantach folks were saying that BIOS temp is misleading and SpeedFan gives the correct temp. A few folks said they were seeing BIOS reporting 65C but SpeedFan says 30C-35C. If that's really the case, I suppose the problem isn't as bad as I thought. Unless I heard otherwise, will try to put the PSU in and try. The problem is the Win8 won't be here til next week, so I can only boot Ubuntu. I suppose there's no SpeedFan equivalent for Linux?

BTW, the case has no fan. That's how small and tight the thing is. There are lots of vents, but no case fan...

Try HWMonitor...it's open source, might have a Ubuntu install for it.

Actually Win8 dvd came today (surprise). Installed it, also installed speedfan and it reported 45C. Not as cool as I'd hope, but not too bad for such tight build and no case fan, I guess.

I believe the reason it overheated before is some unused cable from the psu blocked the cpu fan when I pushed the psu in. This time when I push the psu in I took care to clear all cables from the cpu fan, and that seemed to have solved the problem. Thanks to all for your help!
