Check the drives reviews. Newegg and Amazon are a couple of places with easy to access reviews. Stick with Seagate or Western Digital and you should be fine.

Also make sure the drive will fit your laptop. Now that everything is sata drives the only real variable is the drives thickness. For example the 2TB drives are 15mm thick while most 2.5" drives are 9.5. Thin drives, used in several very thin laptops, are only 7mm thick.
