Adding a router behind a router?

Hi everyone,

I just moved into an apartment at school which offers free internet either through a hard connection or a wireless. Initially I could not connect with my desktop because through some trial and error, I learned that the router uses IP addresses with 10.61.4.xxx rather than a more common 192.168.1.xxx. This caused me quite a bit of confusion and a headache in trying to get my PC to connect to the network but I eventually got it to work!

I went to a thrift store with some buddies today and found myself a Netgear N300 WNR2000 router. I tried to plug it in, and I cant seem to get into it's config. I also noticed that it's getting an orange light on the network connection and it is not getting internet through it.

I attempted to isolate it from the internet and just have my computer connected to the router and access it that way, but still no luck, but my thoughts at this moment are that my PC is probably attempting a IP address it was used to from the apartments internet, not a 192.168.1.xxx, however, I'm not 100% sure on the setup for a manual network config, (non-DHCP).

Anyway, I paid $5, for I really wouldn't be suprised if this thing is dead especially since it was in a thrift store, but does anyone have any ideas? The only reason I want to get this thing working is so that I can use it as a switch for my 1st gen xbox 360 that doesnt have a wireless adapter :)

should not have caused you any grief.. if you just set for DHCP.. you should not care what range it uses. .it will just pick up an IP that is appropriate for the router,,, and work...

Anyway - you don't really need/want a router.. you have one.. sound like you just want a hub/switch (preferably a switch). Don't know capabilities of that router.. may be you can config to work as a switch...
But in principle...Why it need be more complicated that that?

Cheers
