Is an upgrade needed in the foreseeable future?

I play games like Minecraft and Skyrim and hope to play Might and Magic when it comes out after Beta. I'm not a heavy gamer, but I do dabble. My main issue is I'm looking to upgrade to a 27" 1440p monitor. I'm currently using a 7950 card. Will I run into issues?

If so, is this a question of an upgrade or a dual configuration?

Depends on how high your expectations are.

I believe I am still getting good performance with my rig which has a 5+ year old Q9450 and a 4 year old Radeon HD 5850. At 1920x1200 resolution and basically maxing out the graphics settings with the official HQ texture pack and some other HQ texture mods (I haven't installed any ENB yet though) my frame rate are between 50 FPS and 60 FPS. I'm pretty sure I get a little more than 60FPS, but since my LCD monitor is only 60Hz, the FPS gets capped at 60.

See following review to determine how well (or poorly) the Radeon HD 7950 can handle 2560x1600 resolution. Since 2560x1440 basically has 10% fewer pixels, let's just assume that the frame rates will be 10% higher

Note: The test rig uses an...
I run Skyrim at 1440p with a gtx 670, which is in the same performance tier as the 7950 (ref http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html), so you should be okay there. Skyrim makes heavy use of the cpu, though, so perhaps you could tell us what cpu you have?

I have a 3570K with 8GB RAM and a 1TB Caviar Black.

Note: The test rig uses an Intel Core i7-4770K @ 4.2 GHz. If your CPU is less powerful then you can have lower performance in games that are CPU bound. Skyrim is an example of a game that is very CPU bound (dependent). The more powerful the CPU, the better the performance. Especially if you add mods to the game.
