Help needed with upgrading/building high end gaming rig

Hi guys/girls, first time posting.

My current gaming rig is a over 2 years old and is starting to show signs of it's age. I recently purchased farcry 3 and upon playing it even with moderate graphics settings it is lagging up and I get terrible FPS and seeing as there are a few games coming out that I am looking forward to playing like Battlefield 4, I need to do something about it as I want to run high graphics on them.

My current setup is: Asus x58 sabertooth mobo, i7 960, 12gb gskill ripjaws 1600mhz ram (3x4gb sticks), 2 x hd6870's running in crossfire, thermaltake 800w PSu, 120gb SSD main drive and 1TB black caviar storage, all in a antec 900 two case.

Now the problem I am facing is that I don't know whether to just upgrade what I have or start from scratch with a new rig, money is not really an issue but I would rather not spend money if I didn't need to as my wife would kick my butt. Also I don't mind canabalising my current setup in order to finish a new rig if my current stuff is still good enough for a high end gaming machine.

I was looking at firstly just buying new graphics cards but then I started to question whether or not that would be enough or if current model graphics cards would even work with my setup. I was looking at buying either a pair of GTX770's or a single GTX780 for now and maybe buying another later if I needed it, or even a single titan though I wonder if it would be worth the extra $500 over the GTX780's as it costs $1300+ here in Australia. There is also the whole 2gb vs 4gb GTX770 thing, I have read a fair few threads here and most people are saying you don't need the 4gb unless running 3 monitors, well I am currently running 2 monitors and I see a lot of conflicting opinions.

Also I do not like ATI cards as they have caused me nothing but trouble in this rig and I would like to steer clear of cheaper brands.

Thank you in advance for any help given.

Cheers, Aaron.

The ACX coolers are very good. just make certain that you have a decent case.
Really, any GTX780 you buy will be very satisfying.
Here is a link to one with the titan type cooler:

Have you tried the latest catalyst 13.10 beta drivers?

I know there were quite a few improvements for farcry 3 in beta 13.8 and 13.9 so upgrading to 13.10 beta might solve your issues:
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst13-10WINBetaDriver.aspx

Your current i7-960 is fine for a while more still, a nice GPU upgrade is what you should be looking at if the driver update doesn't fix your problems.

and in almost all situations, the extra money for the titan over the 780 is not worth it.

780 vs titan comparison:

I would consider changing in two steps.

1. The most likely best change would be to a strong single graphics card. Since budget is not a great issue, I would suggest a GTX780 superclock. The performance is too close to a titan to make a titan a good buy. Amd seems to still have issues with crossfire and inconsistent response times.

2. If your performance limitation then shifts to the cpu, then you can change to a 4670K and a Z87 based motherboard..

To help clarify your options, run these two tests:

a) Run your games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 50%.
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.

Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
set to 50% and see how you do.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system, and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.

Much thanks for the input.

Though I forgot to mention that my video cards also tend to overheat and crash when running graphics on high, I tried the new drivers and they seemed to fix my fps problems in farcry but after 5 minutes or so they overheat and crash.

I have been looking around at GTX780's and I currently can get EVGA SC with acx cooler for $829 AU, MSI-TF for $854, GigabyteOC for $819 and AsusOC for $854. I don't understand why there is such a varying price on them, am I missing something? I have read a fair few posts on these forums and most people are saying that evga are the best, so why are they one of the cheapest and what makes the MSI-TF worth so much more when as far as I can tell it's not even factory overclocked???

What country are you buying from?

Graphics card vendors like to upsell to make more profit.
In general, the factory overclocks are a fair deal. The fancy coolers and extra vram are not.
EVGA is good in part because of good support.
Look at the evga GTX780 superclock with the stock titan type blower cooler.

I am in Australia, purchasing from Australian vendors as the majority of overseas vendors will not ship to AU. We do not have many evga vendors here and I can not find an overclocked GTX780 without the acx coolers.
