I just stuck a 1150 cpu in a 1155 mobo. How bad did I fail ? are the CPU or the mobo physically damaged ?

I know i'm an idiot, thanks for your time.

Solution
get a proper cpu and stick it in and see if it works or a proper motherboard and put the cpu in. there is no way to test them without the proper parts.

cpu would probably be the one that is dead though if anything as it probably got power where it shouldn't have gotten power. The motherboard send power to the cpu, the cpu isn't active and can't send anything back, so the motherboard may be ok.

You will need the matching equipment with which to test, though that is also risky if the components are broken. Pretty sure this voids the warranty, but you can try to return them.

Hopefully Intel thought about this and put in safety measures, such as testing continuity between a set of pins before power up, both components might be fine.

Only way to know for sure would be to get a motherboard for LGA1150 and a CPU for LGA1155 and see if either of your components survived.

With some luck, the motherboard may not have detected a valid CPU presence pattern in which case it may not have turned on VRMs and both should be fine.
