Can I use an ethernet switch/splitter to do this?

Long story short, my wireless router does not have any more free ethernet ports and I wanna use a wired connection for my xbox instead of wireless for better speeds. Should I get a switch or splitter? and can anyone give me a very short explanation on the differences between the two? thanks

A switch. 10/100/1000.
Unplug something from the router. Plug in the switch. 5 port, 8 port, 24 port, whatever.
Plug in anything else without a current connection into the switch.

That is what a 'switch' is for. Your devices will not know the difference.
