I just received my new M500 240GB SSD from Crucial. Was so excited... until it was "instal OS time". I tried to instal Windows Vista from an my old recovery disks that came with my Gateway system when I originally purchased the computer. It DIDN'T WORK! I tried three times and it still did not work. Seemed to be going fine but at the end of the process it would say "Can not install windows on this computer". What?!

My plan now is to buy a new copy of Windows 7 or 8 and do a brand new, clean install. Two questions.

#1 Will it work??!!

#2 Did my attempt to install from the recovery disks put a bunch of crud on my clean, new SSD? Do I need to do anything to erase the new SSD, or will a clean install of Windows format the disk?

Thanks for your help. This has been a frustrating experience, to say the least.

Solution
Just do a format when you install Win 7/8. Should work fine, the problem (probably) is that your recovery disk isn't really meant for this sort of thing.

Sakura, thanks for the reply! So I shouldn't be concerned that there may be files/data from my failed attempts to install?

Also, will a format "clean" the ssd completely before installing windows?

Thanks again for the help. It was a frustrating experience this afternoon:(

SS, that is good news!!! Yes, I will definitely get something better than vista. Been using windows 7 on a couple machines for awhile now. I really like it. But I'd like to give Win 8 a try.

Have you installd a Windows 8? Would it work well on my new SSD in your opinion?

The windows-8 install will perform a clean install on the ssd (overwrite). But if you feel the need to restore the ssd to a "virgin" state Burn & run this~http://www.dban.org/download
It will wipe everything if you want. Just make sure the keyboard, the dvd drive & the SSD are the only thing plugged in when you run, as it will never start if it "sees" any thing else but the target.

Ur6, thanks for the advice. Question... In your opinion, would it help to restore the ssd to "virgin" state? If so, how?

Honestly, I'd rather just install Windows and save some steps. But if there's any chance that my ssd will have decreased performance due to unwanted files, then I'll take whatever steps are necessary.

I really appreciate your assistance.

Windows-8 will take care of the "garbage" files automatically. Win-8 is the ONLY license I would buy. Win-7 OEM is one time activation, win-7 retail is 5 activations @ $50 more. Win-8 you own forever & can reinstall it as many times and on as many motherboards & HDD, SSD as you like, BUT can only be activated on ONE computer. BIG difference. Win-8 comes with ALL drivers to get started, win-7 you have to find & install everything. A word to the wise those who know win-8 will never go back. OCT.17 Windows 8.1 final will be released FREE You can choose the UI & other improvements. All win-8 licenses will be able to upgrade. There is no choice, IMHO......cheers

Sorry, but I've never really had issues with drivers on 7 either.

And I've used the 8.1 Preview, and like it as little as 8. Adding a button does not help, when it's the menu people want back.

You can activate Win7 OEM multiple times; I've done it. If you switch boards you may need to phone them up, but that's it.
