Hi People,

I am a tech noobie considering a raid backup array for my home computer. I have an Intel dh55tc motherboard which doesn't come with any onboard raid options. I've been told that I would have to resort to a pci-e hardward card for raid. Currently I have all my data on one 1tb drive. What I want to do is keep just my OS and other important files on this primary harddrive, then have all my media data like songs, movies and documents on a raid 1 array with 2 1tb drives.

So what I am confused about is the compatibility of hardware raid cards. How should I go about figuring out what works? I have a win 7 64bit system. I've looked into the LSI SAS 9211-8i card which falls into my price bracket. Will this work with my motherboard? Compatible harddrives are not an issue, as I will only buy harddrives after I pick up a suitable raid card.

Here is the age for the raid card i'm considering.

If this one is not compatible, please suggest one that will work. Thanks in advance.

As I have already mentioned, my motherboard does not have integrated raid. It is over 3 years old, and even for the time was a budget system. So it wasn't on the feature set. I need to know how compatibility with dedicated raid cards work.

I don't want to consider software raid options. My CPU is not powerful and I use processor intensive applications as is. So I wanted to know if this card would work, the LSI SAS 9211-8i. And as for the compatibility, there are many considerations as far as I know. Everything from the OS, to the motherboard type and bit architecture have to work out. So I am looking for someone who can give me a technical answer. Thank you for your help though.

Didn't read your post script. Sorry. Are you absolutely sure this will work. The compatibility document only lists intel server motherboards. I have an Intel dh55tc motherboard.
