Solution
hmms,
first as a safety measure run cpuid hwmonitor to monitor temperatures - if they climb above 70oC for the CPU and aroun 100oC for the gpu ABORT the test pdq...

stress tests>
for the processor runnig prime95 or intelburnstest for an hour or two...
memtest86 for ram...
furmark /not as gentle as the average game, but.../ or any benchmark like unigine or stalker for the gpu...

my first bet would be the high temperature - probably your fan is slacking off (can e...) or is not properly seated (and/or the thermal compound was not good...) dunno really...

fatal hardware error?
here are the probable causes>
5/10 - defective hardware - processor, mobo, rams - you name it :D
4/10 - over the top thermals - is your cooling OK?
1/10 - bad drivers/software - sometimes even antivirus software can cause this, but it is rare...

Also, it is a very common overclocking issue - dabble with your QPI/VTT first, if that fails then playing with VCore comes next...

How can I check for defective hardware?

Cooling is pretty good, pulling through the case (Antec DF-35) at the bottom front of the case and up through the top and back of the case, video card has the stock cooler, and my fan and heatsink combo for the CPU is a Zalman CNPS9700 110mm 2 ball cooler.

Any way I can do a driver check?

No overclocking has been done (other than that which came stock on the video card).

Also, this ONLY happens when playing games, such as Saints Row: the Third, Skyrim, other high-fps games. Games such as Minecraft, Terraria, Spelunky, etc. run no problem for hours on end.

Just ran prime95 for a little over an hour, no crash or anything. I ran it alongside hwmonitor, here were the temp results:

Idle: CPU: 22-23C
GPU: 32C
LowFPS game: CPU: 31-32C
GPU: 40-42C
Prime95: CPU: Max: 47C
Average: 45C
GPU: 34C

I'll run memtest im the morning (if I remember). I'll also try to run furmark if I can find the time.
