I read an article online that said that for gaming, overclocking really doesn't deliver that much of a performance difference. I am wondering if that is true, if overclocking could benefit gaming, and if it could save me money.
You can simply monitor your CPU usage while playing your game of choice and see if it is maxed out. If so, overclock, if not, don't.
It has a lot to do with frames per second. The CPU does basically the same work if there is no AA or lots of AA and eye candy. So, if you like quick responsive games where you reduce the eye candy and AA for snappy response, CPU is more likely to be a limiting factor. However, if you like high resolution monitors/triple monitors with all the eye candy and AA in place, you don't need so high of a CPU.
All this is generally speaking of course. The best bet is to simply monitor your CPU speed while playing. The simplest way is to alt tab out of the game and check the task manager.
