Hey guys. I just recently watched a video on youtube that compared the AMD Athlon X4 750K to the Intel i5 4670k: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIT9uLDjZcg They both performed very equally until they got to newer games with better GPUs, like a 780 and Metro Last Light, then the i5 smoked the Athlon.

I am planning on building a new gaming pc that will have a 760 and possibly SLI in the future. It is primarily aimed for next gen gaming instead of picking up either of the new consoles. I was looking at the FX 6300 or the 4670k. After seeing that video, I was wondering how well the 6300 would do against the 4670k. I am trying to keep this build under a budget so the 6300 helps with that but I am willing to spend an extra $120 if it will be better for upcoming games. I was also wondering would the extra 2 cores on the 6300 help against the 4670k because the new consoles will have octa core CPUs and games will start to be designed for more cores. What do you guys think?

Go with the intel i5. The reason the consoles have 8 cores is to make up for the weakness of the cores and their low clock speed.

The performance of games is primarily determined by the graphics card/s.
Few games use more than 2-3 fast threads, so the extra threads of the FX cpus are not that much help.
The intel threads are much faster per clock.

For balanced gaming budget twice your cpu cost for graphics.
I think $130 is about the dividing line in cpu. Below that, amd does well. Above that Intel is better.

And... Those who know the future won't tell. Those who tell, don't know.
Buy what you need today, today.

The 4670K by far:-

The 8 cores in consoles are very weak. They're clocked at only 1.75GHz (XB1) or 2.0GHz (PS4) and are still less efficient per clock than Intel. They get the equivalent of 3.5-3.9 in Cinebench (compared to 6.2 for the 4670k). For lesser well threaded tasks, the difference is even higher 0.5 for the consoles & 1.7 for the 4670k.

Edit: The GPU's on the new consoles are roughly on par with a 7790-7850 discrete card in terms of hardware. They may be used slightly more efficiently, but this around, the console GFX are on par with a mid-range GFX card from day 1 (unlike previous consoles where they've been nearly on par with a top-tier card). You're not missing out sticking with PC gaming.

4670k no doubt.

more cores =/= more performance.

Alright thanks a ton guys! It seems the 4670k is the obvious answer and I'll just dish out the extra cash. I will be grabbing the MSI G45 Gaming motherboard with it I think. What are your thoughts on that?
