I have an old Dell computer I want to restore back to its original state. I have a disc that says "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2." Is this all I need or should there be a Service Pack 1?

Solution

Is it the key from the sticker or the one from the actual XP installation? The pre-installed XP may use a Dell manufacturer license and that doesn't work with a reinstall. If nothing helps, call Dell and ask for a new key. You only need the service tag of your laptop for that.

Ok, when I put the disc in it says you are trying to dl an older version than the one that is on the computer. I know this is the disc that came with the computer? I guess it don't really matter.. but I can't use the disc from my laptop that has Windows 8 and put it on the one I want to restore can I?

No, you can not install win8 on the laptop, because you only have a license for win XP. The message indicates, that a bunch of updates have been installed after XP SP2. I recommend installing the disk and load all the update from Microsoft, before you install any other software.
