I've installed Notepad++ and Rosetta Stone, and noticed that both times Windows 8 doesn't make shortcuts on my desktop even though I have the options do so selected. How do I fix this?

Not sure.. I empathise with you - and your experience (and frustrations) are similar to mine.. which is why I went back to Win7. I wait for MS to make Win8 desktop PC friendly before I consider going back (and 8.1 does NOT cut it)

It is making tiles in metro. I'm trying to use metro as little as possible since I'm using a damn PC, not a tablet. Is there no way to make it just create a shortcut on the desktop directly?

Many applications give that option during install. For those that don't, right click on the tile, select Open File Location, rightclick on the file and drag to the desktop. Select Create Shortcut here.

Or, pin them to the taskbar.

It's a bit of a roundabout fix (my programs usually install a shortcut if i ask them) is to right click on the metro tile->open file location->and then take that shortcut that is highlighted in the file folder area and right click->make shortcut

It's a bit strange that your programs arent making desktop shortcuts when you ask, maybe you changed some setting somewhere? Or you accidentally unchecked it before hitting install? Regardless, the above method should work
