I have an older HP desktop and HP scanner and spare ATA hard drive. No scanner HP Win7 driver, needs XP and parallel port. Desktop has Win7Ult and parallel port. Want to dual boot new hd and install XP (I have) on it so I can occasionally use the scanner. All hardware in, device manager identifies hd and says driver ok. My computer doesnt recognize it as being present. Help

Make sure the jumpers on the hard drives are set correctly.
ATA hard drives need to be set as master/slave/ single/Cable Select. Depending on how it is attached to the ribbon cable.
Settings for WD drives for example.

setup page lists first channel device 0 as [none] first channel device 1 as [ST3etc] the new drive
boot priority is [HDD group] boot page lists only [ST3]
exit setup and win7 boots normally off old drive.
